Our song made it into the news, all over the place, including City TV in Vancouver! Way to go, Sangster!

Normally on this day, we would be having our big Christmas concert at Sangster. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to host this, so the students and I have prepared something else. Enjoy! Hey everyone! Today's video is a singalong with a couple folk songs and a special farewell tune for the Grade 5 students. Enjoy! If you don't know how to read Spanish, that's okay - you will need to sit in a chair and be ready to stomp your feet, snap your fingers, clap your hands, and pat your knees! Let me know if you are able to do the whole thing without getting mixed up! One of our Sangster Grade 5 students was asking me this week about where she could find piano lessons online. It's always best to learn an instrument in person, but if you can't do that, YouTube can often be a GREAT place to go! I did a bit of looking around, and I think this video series is awesome if you want to learn how to play: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXc9lYLG2RW1fuivdX_wGOBE02wKd4nxw. That link will take you to the whole playlist, and I'll put up the first video below. Keep in mind, that the piano is not something you will be able to master in a day, so be patient with yourself and be ready to do it for a long time! The hang drum is related to the steel pan drums that are used in the Caribbean, but has a different shape and is played without mallets. Different note are played by tapping the drum in specific places. The instrument has a magical sound! The Planets, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the solar system. When my sister was a teenager, she played French Horn in the Vancouver Youth Symphony, and they got together and performed The Planets with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra - the REAL professionals! It was so cool to see my sister performing right in the middle of TWO orchestras! This video is the NDR Radiophilharmonie, a German radio orchestra. Whether you are in Kindergarten or Grade 5, there is something in here for you! :) Today, we take to the viking skies in music from German composer Richard Wagner (FYI: Pronounce it REE-card VAHG-ner), who lived from 1813-1883. We'll ride to battle with the Valkyries, servants of the Norse god Odin! If you recognize this piece, it's because you have probably heard it before! It has been used in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials. What images come into your head when you listen to this? What do you think about when you listen to music? Do you ever have a random picture in your head that always pops up when you hear a certain song? Well, the creator of this video loves to doodle, and maybe this is what they think about when they hear "In The Hall of the Mountain King". Written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875, the 'Peer Gynt Suite' (which this song is from) tells the story of a young boy – Peer Gynt, who falls in love with a girl but is not allowed to marry her. He runs away into the mountains but is captured by trolls who take him to their King. Peer Gynt tries to escape but is chased by the trolls (and runs into the troll King) but eventually gets away. Listen out for: The strings that play the sounds of Peer tiptoeing and running to escape. The tiptoeing sound is an effect called pizzicato where string players pluck the strings of their instrument rather than use a bow. What is YOUR favourite insect? The lyrics are below the video! If it started as a little egg And now it’s got six skinny legs That bug, is called an insect. If it’s got an exoskeleton A head, a thorax, abdomen That bug, is called an insect If it’s a bumblebee, If it’s a ladybug If it’s a butterfly It’s in the insect club But it’s only when a bug can say “I’m a six-legged invertebrate” That bug, is called an insect If it started as a little egg And now it’s got six skinny legs That bug, is called an insect. If it’s got an exoskeleton A head, a thorax, abdomen That bug, is called an insect If it’s a walking stick, If it’s a spittle bug If it’s a katydid It’s in the insect club But it’s only when a bug can say “I’m a six-legged invertebrate” That bug, is called an insect If it started as a little egg And now it’s got six skinny legs That bug, is called an insect. If it’s got an exoskeleton A head, a thorax, abdomen That bug, is called an insect This one is geared towards our older students, but of course, anyone can give it a try! It's the Hand-Clapping Challenge, brought to you by Visual Musical Minds! This one is geared towards our students in Kindergarten and Grade 1. This recording is done by Ana Vidovic- one of the modern greats of classical guitar. Asturias is a place in Spain, and I have been there! If you can, go look at a world map and find where Spain is in relation to Canada. This is the country that Albeniz (the composer of this song) is from. This is dedicated to the students and families of Sangster Elementary School. We love you, and we miss you, and we can't wait until we are back in the classroom together again! 'The Fresh Staff of Sangster' was written by Mr. Poynter, and is a parody of 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme', written by Will Smith & Quincy Jones. It was filmed by the staff of Sangster Elementary School, and produced by Mr. Poynter.
Metamorphosis, is defined as "a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one". How does music change you? Oscar Peterson is known as one of the greatest jazz piano players of all time. He is also Canadian. This song is the anthem for Music Monday 2020. There are many vocal renditions of this song. But my favourite, is Oscar Peterson's original instrumental version shown here. Enjoy! Hey Everyone, Here is another primary music class for ya! While it should be a fun video for all our students, the content of the lesson is really geared towards those who are in Kindergarten. Take care and enjoy! :) - Mr. Poynter |
